UN mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea

Reference:

  • The Order of the President of Ukraine #1320/2000 of 08.12.2000;
  • Resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers #232 of 14.03.2001.

6 military observers and 1 staff officer carry out their duties with the UN mission to Ethiopia and Eritrea.

According to the resolution #1312 of 31.07.2000, the UN Security Council took decision to establish the UN mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea numbering 220 military observers, 4200 persons of peacekeeping forces and necessary civil personnel.

The main tasks of the Mission are:

  • to conduct the peacekeeping operation within the boundaries of established Temporary security zone (TSZ);
  • to carry out observation within the boundaries of TSZ by patrolling and establishing check points;
  • to investigate the cases of penetration through the TSZ boundaries by armed persons, military units; the investigation of the cases, connected with opening the fire, or illegal actions to civil population by both sides;
  • to inspect the quartering places of police units;
  • to provide the marking of the TSZ boundaries on the terrain;
  • to provide the security activity during meetings of Military Coordination Committee (if the meeting takes place within the TSZ boundaries);
  • to assist the Border Commission established in Geneva in settlement of the crisis, to determine the borders between Ethiopia and Eritrea;
  • to encourage the return of the refugees to the homes during coordination with international humanitarian organizations.
