On July 28, 1994, the Moldovan Parliament approved the
new Constitution of the country. It defines Moldova as an independent,
democratic and "single" state. It sets Moldovan in the Latin script as the
official language, but guarantees the use of Russian and the other
languages spoken in Moldova. The neutrality of the country is stipulated and the
stationing of foreign troops on its territory is banned. Provisions for the
autonomy of the Dniestr and Gagauz regions were also made. Under the new
Constitution, the Government is semi-presidential, with executive authority
divided between the non-partisan President and cabinet. President is the Head of
the State. President provide the candidature of the Prim Minister, which forms
the cabinet. Both Prim Minister and cabinet, are approved by the Parliament.
Parliament (unicameral - 104 seats) holds supreme legislative authority. The
President and members of Parliament are elected in direct order by people to
four-year terms.
The majority of the
today's Parliament is formed by representatives from parties of democratic
orientation. The communist and other pro Russian parties and movements are in
opposition.
The next presidential
elections are set for December 2004 and of the Parliament - for March
2006.
